Weekend Escape to Porto – A Perfect Blend of Charm, Views & Flavors

Etoile Compass Porto Travel Blog

If you haven’t been to Porto, Portugal, make sure you go – it’s an absolutely fabulous place. We’ve just returned from a weekend break in October, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The weather was glorious, with temperatures reaching 27°C, ideal for exploring (though quite hot at times!).

The Journey

We began our trip in style, spending the night before at the Hilton Hotel in Gatwick’s South Terminal, as our 7am British Airways flight meant an early start. The Hilton exceeded expectations – spacious rooms, a smooth check-in, and a delightful dinner at the Garden Restaurant with excellent service and a great menu selection.

Our British Airways flight was spot-on, with fantastic service and a hot breakfast in Club Europe that set the tone for a relaxed trip ahead.

Arrival in Porto

On arrival, we used Booking.com transfers – by far the most competitive option. Although the airport was busy and it took about 45 minutes to exit, even with hand luggage, we were soon heading to our hotel in the city’s heart.

Where We Stayed

We stayed at the Ribeira Douro Hotel, located in Porto’s most picturesque and historic Ribeira area. Built from two restored heritage buildings, the hotel perfectly blends modern comfort with traditional charm. The interior design is effortless yet stylish, creating a cozy and relaxed atmosphere. With riverside views, restaurants, and local attractions just steps away, it’s the perfect base for a weekend stay.

Exploring Porto

From the hotel, we explored the Porto Cathedral, the stunning Palácio da Bolsa, and of course, the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge – a double-deck iron masterpiece connecting Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.We walked both levels of the bridge, each offering breathtaking views of the city and river. You might even witness the local tradition of kids jumping from the lower deck into the river – a daring (and slightly nerve-wracking) sight!

A Douro River cruise is an absolute must. We chose the Six Bridges Tour, which sails under the Arrábida, Infante D. Henrique, Dom Luís I, Maria Pia, São João, and Freixo bridges – a wonderful way to see the city from the water.

Don’t miss the Gaia Cable Car, a short five-minute ride that offers panoramic aerial views of Porto, the Douro River, and its stunning bridges – a dream for photography lovers.

For the Port Lovers

If you’re a Port wine enthusiast, you’re in heaven here. Porto is home to some of the most iconic Port wineries in the world. If your time is limited, we recommend a visit to Taylor’s – a truly classic experience where you can savour and learn about Portugal’s most famous export.

Culinary Highlights

Porto’s dining scene is a culinary delight.

  • Our first night was spent at Poente by Vallado, where we tried the Bacalhau à Brás – absolutely amazing.

  • The second evening took us to the fabulous Terra Nova, where the octopus with black rice was simply incredible. Both restaurants offered fantastic service and a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Final Thoughts

Porto is one of those cities that captures your heart instantly – vibrant yet relaxed, historic yet modern, and filled with flavour, charm, and beauty at every turn. Whether you’re wandering cobbled streets, sipping Port by the river, or enjoying a sunset cruise, Porto promises a weekend you’ll never forget.
